EXHIBITION

ideation, n

/ˌaɪdiˈeɪʃ(ə)n/

1.  The creative process of generating, developing, and communicating new ideas.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago is not just a cohort of artists mastering their craft, but also an incubation ground for innovative thought processes and collaborations explored through making.  This exhibition showcases hybridized media works by three artists at SAIC who deal with themes of cognition, translation, and process to push the boundaries of conventional thought.  In parallel with these selections, the three artists collaborated with artist/curator Emily Owen to create “Action Interviews” that use artistic processes to tell an embodied story of thinking, making, and thinking through making.

EXHIBITION:

Gene Siskel Film Center

May 20 - July 25, 2015

IDEATION:

process and parallel thinking

ARTISTS:

David Hall (MFA Writing, 2016)

An interdisciplinary artist from the writing program, David investigates concepts of memory, language, and the duration and erosion of time in his “digital desktop performances,” reimagining the ways an audience interacts with performance artwork in the digital sphere.

Cathy Hsiao (MFA Fibers, 2016)

Cathy Hsiao navigates between contemporary digital methods and ancient weaving techniques by developing a hybrid language through freeform Jacquard weavings.  She links the auditory, tactile, and visual senses by creating patterns drawn from recoded sound waveforms.

Eva Maria Lourdes Martinez (MFA Sculpture, 2016)

With a background in psychology, Eva uses a multifaceted approach to explore human cognition.  Providing a platform for reflection, her practice is rooted in the ways we might test ideas and foster understanding through an engagement with the imagination.  Her work in this show considers the ways we might reorient ourselves from real to imagined spaces using tactile and video media.

CURATOR:

Emily Owen (MA Arts Administration and Policy, 2016)

Emily Owen is a multidisciplinary artist and scholar currently pursuing her Master of Arts degree in Arts Administration and Policy from SAIC. Emily's practice and research revolves around the ways artists think and act creatively and how this creativity can be translated to bridge diverse fields.  Her current thesis work involves the development of “Action Interviews” in which she collaborates with artists to integrate artistic process into the content of the interview itself.
